 Io ho sempre amato la città, ho sempre amato Milano, ho avuto il piacere dal 2010 in poi di assistere alla sua rinascita sfolgorante, di grattacieli, socialità, mondanità, moda, una frizzantezza, che mi faceva pensare di essere al centro di qualcosa di importante, che mi permetteva di paragonarla a Parigi (città dove passai un’intera estate e che amo tantissimo). Ho visto cambiarne il profilo e non scorderò mai la prima volta che ho visitato piazza Gae Aulenti e i grattacieli che la contornano, mai avrei immaginato di poter vedere tanta bellezza, e dalle linee così futuristiche, in quella che ho sempre considerato la mia città, che ho abitato e vissuto dal lontano 1989, con periodi alternati in cui vivevo sulla cintura, in campagna, perché non dimentico che sono anche un campagnolo, e le case a Milano sono carissime, troppo, come un po’ tutto del resto e in fondo, tornare la sera in un posto in mezzo al verde non è affatto male e non mi sono mai pesati gli spostamenti, soprattutto coi mezzi. Poi qualcosa ha cominciato a incrinarsi, qualcosa non mi tornava più, e inizialmente l’ho imputato al fatto di avere un compagno che ama stare in casa quanto me e all’età che volenti o nolenti avanza. In fondo per tanti anni, posso dire di aver fatto un’ubriacatura colossale di mondanità: locali, bar, discoteche, sfilate e inaugurazioni, mostre e concerti, ci sono stati anni in cui uscivo 7 giorni su 7, quindi penso di aver dato il mio bel contributo allo sviluppo della città, senza contare gli ultimi 4 o 5 anni, con gli spettacoli messi in piedi con La Baronessina e Davide Nevoso (il perfido).

Poi è arrivato il Covid e ha dato una sberla senza precedenti all’intera razza umana. Tutto è cambiato, nonostante gran parte del mondo finga che tutto, entro breve potrà tornare come prima. Sto assistendo ad una RIMOZIONE DI MASSA, senza precedenti, materiale interessante per gli storici del futuro, tante, troppe persone sembrano non volere accettare che niente sarà più come prima. Il Covid non ha fatto altro che evidenziare in modo clamoroso, che il nostro stile di vita è divenuto insostenibile, non solo per il nostro bistrattato pianeta, ma anche per la nostra psiche, soprattutto da quando sono entrati in gioco i social, un tale bombardamento di informazioni, per ovvi motivi quasi sempre superficiali, perché una tale massa di dati, ti impedisce di trovare il tempo per approfondire e capire davvero le cose che ci circondano, il risultato di tutto questo è un conformismo soffocante, che ci avvolge come una coltre venefica, e in qualche modo ci impedisce di goderci l’esistenza, sembra una specie di Nouvelle Caccia alle Streghe, se appena, appena esci dal conforme, vieni massacrato, e se ti va bene sui social, se ti va male vieni pure menato e in alcuni casi proprio ammazzato. In tutto questo la rete, che rimane pur sempre uno strumento, diventa una possibile soluzione, e le aziende, con anni di ritardo si accorgono che, per molti contesti, si può lavorare a distanza, con enorme risparmio per i loro portafogli. Molti liberi professionisti, come il sottoscritto, scoprono che possono lavorare da casa, evitare i viaggi, i mezzi, risparmiare quelle due o tre ore al giorno di tempo, risparmiare sui pranzi, sugli spostamenti, sui vestiti, in fondo puoi metterti la camicia stilosa davanti alla webcam, ma sotto puoi stare in tuta e infradito e in estate pure in mutande, e nessuno se ne accorge e non è una cosa temporanea a causa del Covid, ormai molte aziende stanno mettendo nei loro piani una riduzione degli spazi dedicati agli uffici, stabilmente. Il Covid prima o poi passerà, ed ha solo accelerato un processo che altrimenti, sarebbe stato più lento e meno traumatico, ma il cambiamento c’è e porta con sé tutta una serie di conseguenze enormi. Penso al centro delle città, come diventeranno? Quanti uffici e centri direzionali resteranno vuoti? Per non parlare di tutto l’indotto, bar, ristoranti, abbigliamento (in ufficio ti devi presentare vestito di tutto punto), servizi, mezzi pubblici. Smetteranno di speculare sugli affitti in modo tanto vergognoso, come succede da sempre in tutte le grandi città del mondo? Che forse, magari, si tornerà ad abitare il centro? Sono domandone a cui io non ho risposta, di certo qualcuno pagherà più di altri, penso a chi ha negozi, ristoranti, bar, strettamente connessi al lavoro negli uffici, molti chiuderanno, anzi, molti stanno già chiudendo. Non ne ho sentite poche di storie di bar o ristoranti, che sentendosi rifiutare un abbassamento almeno parziale degli affitti per calmierare il lockdown, dai loro proprietari immobiliari, si sono rotti di pagare cifre assurde e han deciso di chiudere tutto. Di certo in questo periodo, ci siamo accorti che PRIVATO non è affatto bello, e che lo STATO è tornato prepotentemente centrale perché le persone non muoiano di fame in massa, e ben venga. Ci troviamo di fronte ad una sfida immane, se sapremo governarla, accettando il cambiamento e trasformandolo a nostro vantaggio, potrebbe essere l’occasione per migliorare lo stile di vita, un po’ per tutti, altrimenti non c’è affatto da stare tranquilli, di certo il mondo a cui eravamo abituati fino ad un anno fa, non c’è più.

Then Covid arrived and gave an unprecedented slap to the entire human race. Everything has changed, despite much of the world pretending that everything will soon be back to how it was before. Covid has done nothing but highlight in a sensational way, that our lifestyle has become unsustainable, not only for our mistreated planet, but also for our psyche, especially since social media came into play, such a bombing of information, for obvious reasons almost always superficial, because such a mass of data prevents you from finding the time to really deepen and understand the things that surround us, the result of all this is a suffocating conformism, which envelops us like a blanket poisons, and somehow prevents us from enjoying our existence, it seems a kind of New Witch Hunt, if as soon as, as soon as you leave the compliant, you are massacred, and if you are good on social media, if it goes badly you are also beaten and in some cases just killed. In all this, the network, which still remains a tool, becomes a possible solution, and companies, with years of delay, realize that, for many contexts, it is possible to work remotely, with enormous savings for their portfolios. Many freelancers, like myself, discover that they can work from home, avoid travel, transport, save those two or three hours a day of time, save on lunches, travel, clothes, after all you can put on a stylish shirt in front of the webcam, but underneath you can be in overalls and flip-flops and in the summer even in underwear, and nobody notices it and it is not a temporary thing due to Covid, now many companies are putting in their plans a reduction of the spaces dedicated to offices stably. Covid will sooner or later pass and has only accelerated a process that otherwise would have been slower and less traumatic, but the change is there and brings with it a whole series of enormous consequences. I think of the city center, how will they become? How many offices and business centers will remain empty? Not to mention all the related industries, bars, restaurants, clothing (in the office you must show up fully dressed), services, public transport. Will they stop speculating on rents in such a shameful way, as has always happened in all the big cities of the world? Maybe, maybe, we will return to live in the center? I am a question to which I have no answer, certainly someone will pay more than others, I think of those who have shops, restaurants, bars, closely connected to work in offices, many will close, indeed, many are already closing. I have not heard a few stories of bars or restaurants, which, being refused at least a partial lowering of rents to calm the lockdown, by their real estate owners, have stopped paying absurd figures and have decided to close everything. Certainly, in this period, we realized that PRIVATE is not nice at all, and that the STATE is back overwhelmingly central so that people do not starve in masse, and so be it. We are faced with a huge challenge, if we know how to govern it, accepting the change and transforming it to our advantage, it could be an opportunity to improve the lifestyle, a bit for everyone, otherwise there is no need to rest assured, certainly the world we were used to until a year ago is gone.
